Project Overview
Mid infrared molecular spectroscopy technology enables the analysis of polymers coatings composites geological samples soil bulk materials such as powders and granules and even historical artefacts and artwork. The Agilent 4300 FTIR brings this advanced technology directly to users in a variety of industries delivering immediate analysis results in the field. Weighing just two kilograms and featuring a unique hot swap battery system the device is easy to use for extended periods. Its design bridges the gap between a sleek laboratory instrument and a rugged outdoor measurement tool appealing to a wide range of users. The assembly approach conceals fasteners within a sophisticated handheld solution and all data is accessible online.
Challenge & Results
The design project faced the challenge of integrating advanced spectroscopic capabilities into a compact and robust form factor without compromising usability or performance. Achieving a balance between durability for fieldwork and the precision expected in laboratory environments required innovative material selection and careful attention to ergonomics. The team addressed issues related to thermal management and user interface accessibility to ensure reliable operation in diverse conditions. Iterative prototyping and user feedback informed refinements that enhanced both the tactile experience and the intuitive operation of the device. The final result is a product that not only withstands demanding environments but also streamlines workflow for professionals across multiple disciplines. This project demonstrates how thoughtful design can elevate scientific instrumentation by making cutting edge analysis accessible and practical outside traditional laboratory settings.
