Project Overview
A landmark in Melbourne’s public transport history this tram is the first to be both designed and manufactured in the city. It introduces a fully low floor layout for improved accessibility and offers increased passenger capacity and comfort. The tram features distinctive LED head and tail lighting and a custom designed interior that reflects Melbourne’s unique character. This project sets a new benchmark for urban mobility and design innovation in Australia.
Challenge & Results
Key challenges included integrating advanced onboard energy storage to reduce network power demand and developing safety systems suited to Melbourne’s complex shared road environment. The design team had to ensure compatibility with the world’s largest tram network and address local operational scenarios while supporting a high proportion of local manufacturing. The project resulted in a tram that delivers significant energy savings, enhanced safety features such as obstacle detection and pedestrian protection, and supports local industry and jobs.
