Project Overview

The Returnr Stackable Bowl is a pioneering reusable product designed for free borrowing within the Returnr range. Crafted from twin walled stainless steel, the bowl is engineered for durability and can be shared thousands of times with a six dollar fully refundable deposit. This initiative aims to eliminate single use takeaway packaging by offering a sustainable alternative. The bowl is made from over seventy percent recycled material, does not retain odours or stains, and is fully recyclable at the end of its life with active global collection and recycling programs.

Challenge & Results

The design process for the Returnr Stackable Bowl presented several key challenges including ensuring compatibility with a wide range of food service operations and creating a form that would nest efficiently for storage and transport. Achieving a balance between robust construction and a lightweight feel required extensive prototyping and material testing. The team also addressed the need for a user friendly experience by refining the bowl’s ergonomics and stackability to support both commercial and consumer use. Results from the project include widespread adoption by cafes and food outlets, positive feedback on ease of cleaning and handling, and measurable reductions in single use packaging waste. The project has also contributed to broader industry conversations about circular economy solutions and has demonstrated the viability of deposit based reuse systems at scale.
